Is SEO dead?

I was reading a thread at a big webmaster forum yesterday which made the claim that "SEO is dead." Now, it's hard to say whether or not the original poster was being serious or sarcastic, but he referenced some other news he'd been reading on a few authority sites that made the "dead" claim.

The notion was that, because of the prevalence of Web 2.0 community sites, the idea of needing to optimize for any of the engines was going away — and fast. The idea was also put forth by another poster that, because of the huge number of content management systems that are already setup to be "search engine friendly", the need to have any additional knowledge to rank well was quickly diminishing. Just search for "seo is dead" in Google and you'll find many people expressing the same ideas.

My answer to all this? Poppycock.

First, while it is true that there are many CMS programs that are search engine friendly out of the box, on-page factors matter so little to ranking (at least in Google) that even if the on-page playing field was leveled, it would make little difference in the current search engine results.

Second, SEO is about far more than just what's on the page. The way you analyze what keywords are worth optimizing for, the way you write the content around those keywords, and the links you get to the pages that you want to rank for those keywords all have a large role to play in how much traffic you get from the search engines — and that analysis takes specialized knowledge. Anyone can learn to do it, but it does have to be learned.

Third, and most importantly, Web 2.0 is nice, and sites that revolve around that kind of community are huge traffic mongers (e.g. YouTube), but there will always be a need for full-text indexing of the web.

Seriously, does anyone go to YouTube to find information on important topics like cancer treatments or solar power or mortgage refinancing? Uh, no. Does anyone go to Facebook or MySpace or Friendster for any of those important searches? Hardly. As for Twitter… how much serious information can you put into 140 characters?

The only real Web 2.0 contender I've seen in those areas is Wikipedia. However, I have never seen a "how to" article in Wikipedia. I've never seen a review of a commercial product there, either — just two of the many very large markets that info-sites like Wikipedia have no share in.

To understand why many people will never rely on Web 2.0 properties for important queries, hop over to Yahoo Answers and read some of the responses to the questions asked there. Many answers are completely devoid of referenced facts. Some are barely legible. Others are clearly written by teenagers — or people who have the mentality of teenagers anyway. That's not the kind of resource folks will turn to for serious inquiries.

No, people will still go to the big search engines which, hopefully, will rank pages from sites that demonstrate some kind of authority in such matters.

This whole "SEO is dead" foolery reminds me of the popular idea going around some years ago that "print is dead." The thought was that because computers are so commonplace now, people would stop buying books. After all, it's so much easier to search through information on a computer, and it's faster and cheaper to produce books on a computer, so people would in time stop reading physical books.

That was more than 20 years ago. Have people stopped reading books? Let's see. In 2007 Barnes & Noble sold $4.68 billion in books. Borders sold $3.41 billion. Amazon, $4.63 billion. According to Reuters Entertainment, the UK publishes 206,000 new titles per year. The USA publishes 172,000 per year. So much for print being dead, right?

Web 2.0 sites are good sources of traffic, and are not to be dismissed when planning your site's traffic-generation campaigns, especially if you are in a niche that caters to the kind of content readily found on such sites. But to drop all efforts at ranking in the search engines because Web 2.0 sites are popular would be a serious mistake. I daresay that most of the people who are serious about buying aren't the kind of folks who would turn to such sites for advice or direction. They'll go to the search engines — and our sites will be waiting for them.

It really seems to me that the folks crying "SEO is dead" are the folks who have been unwilling or unable to do what it takes to rank well in the search engines. They want SEO to die because they think it will be better for them. They feel that Google and the other big engines will eventually include social media sites into their search algorithms, and then all those optimized sites will drop out of the rankings.

But guess what? SEOs have been using social media sites to improve their ranking for years! And if Google ever does include social media ratings and rankings in their algorithm, how long do you think it will take the SEO crowd to start finding ways to improve their social media rankings and improve their search engine results? Yup, SEO may change a bit, but it will still be alive and well.

But hey, I hope folks take this "SEO is dead" nonsense seriously and drop out of the competition. That makes more room for us to step in and get their traffic, right?

Built website

Whether it is for business, pleasure or just something to do, everyone seems to be building themselves web sites these days.

It’s getting ever easier to do and there is a growing list of practical purposes for all of them. To make things better there are hundreds of places to buy cheap domain names these days so your site can look that much more professional.

While it was once more cost effective to build a site off of another domain name - something like http://www.sampledomain.com/yourname - it never looked that good.

For a personal site no one cared, but for a business or organization it took a lot away from its credibility and style. From the very beginning of the world wide web a non independent domain has reeked of tackiness. At the present, such things are only really acceptable when used for personal or not for profit web sites.

The fact that cheap domains are now so easily attained there is no excuse left in avoiding it. If you are already doing business online then the sleeker look is a must. Person after person will tell you that they trust a business more when it is set up online by itself.

To a potential customer a domain name speaks in the same professional manner as a 1 800 number. Going the other route suggests the same level of professionalism as a cheap storefront sign. This tells us that by taking advantage of a cheap domain name as opposed to a free tacked on name communicates that the business is that much more committed to itself.

Further more, as any marketer will tell you, name recognition is an important key to winning over clients. Once they are able to remember the business’s name they should be able to do nothing more then type it into their browser and add “.com” to find out more about it.

Passing on a cheap domain name and using the secondary name alternative means your potential clients have that much more to remember; and marketing experts tell us plainly that they won’t remember.

Personal websites don’t need this. For people looking to share family photos, journals, literature or art there are thousands of web communities that offer to host. In most instances there isn’t a lot of reason to go any other way. Frankly, if you’re having fun doing it and you want a personal site that looks that much cooler then take advantage of all that cheap domain registration out there.

The perk in going that route for a personal site is that advertising and name recognition isn’t a big concern. Most people shopping for cheap domain names for these kind of private sites only want the name to be cute and appealing to friends and family. The “.com” isn’t as important here.

This makes cheap domains cost even less money because the “.net,” “.us,” and other extensions aren’t as sought after.

So maybe it’s time to get rid of that extra long web name you picked up for free. Try this out and be a master of your own
domain.

Good Web Design for Your Business

Web design is a lot more than just producing the perfect looking website but sadly many people don't realise this and as a result they don't build and design their website with anything other than making it visually appealing in mind, which is a big mistake! The main reasons that people produce websites are either to make a profit, provide information on a subject area or to entertain. for visit to:-www.automatic-content.comSo if you want you website to be truly successful at what it does then there are certain points that you need to take into consideration when it is being designed. These points are as follows and are mainly concerned with if you are producing your website for the reason of profit: • Your site has to have a good navigation; people won't be patient enough to struggle finding their way around your site • If your business offers a large range of products or services then the most prominent of these should be on display the most • You need to clearly demonstrate what it is that your business has to offer • The points of contact for your website should be clearly visible to the browsers of your website • Your website should not be cluttered with useless information • The text that is placed on your website needs to be inviting to read Just by applying these simple rules to your website you will be giving your business more of a chance of being successful; however not many websites seem to put these points together with a good website design. Having a website designed in the correct way means it is accessible and usable as well as being search engine ready. Good website design can apply to your site if it is new or if you feel that it needs a new design. more visit to;-www.google-friendly-page.com Sadly many websites suffer from lack of design variation, a lack of imagination and/or development ability. For this reason it is considered important to design individual sub-pages for some of the issues your website addresses. These can help your site from getting stale and we make sure they are not too different from one another, so as not to confuse potential customers. Many of the web developers around have a graphic arts background, meaning they may pay more attention to how a page looks rather than considering other issues such as how visitors are going to find your site via a search engine. Some might rely more on advertising than search engines to attract visitors to the site. On the other side of the issue, search engine optimisation consultants are concerned with how well a web site works technically and textually: how much traffic it generates via search engines, and how many sales it makes, assuming looks don't contribute to the sales. As a result, the designers and SEO consultants often end up in disputes where the designer wants more 'pretty' graphics, and the SEO wants lots of 'ugly' keyword-rich text, bullet lists, and text links. So when you are having your website built or if your website is undergoing a redesign make sure that you keep the above points in mind to ensure that your site has every possibility of being successful.

Nutrition

Health is big business, so by opening a nutrition venture now, you expand your position to profit. Top of the list you need to decide on what type of business you wish to build. A few options are accessible for you to choose from.

One option is to sign with a company that uses nutrition business representatives to sell their products. A number of these are Multi Level Marketing companies. The business remains yours, but normally they'll give training, support, and tools for sales and marketing. There are typically good benefits and very few downsides. For example, the public is most often familiar with the company name. This allows the nutrition business owner to get set up for success.

Typically they will help you with the construction of a website linked directly to their warehouse. Orders are processed from your website, and products are shipped to your customers directly. This is how make earn your money. A primary drawback is that if no one hears about your web site, you can't get any orders.

Remember, you have to spend a little money to drive web surfers to your supplement business opportunity site on the internet. And of course, it's essential to create web site content that is search engine optimized. The higher the keyword appears in the search engine listing, the greater your chances will be for customers to come upon your web site.

Another option is to attend college and get a degree in nutrition. This option costs much more and takes longer, but upon graduation your nutrition business options really open up wide. A lot of nutritionists work independently, but will work alongside doctors and hospitals. They build a practice and see clients in their home or in a rented space.

Beginning a supplement business opportunity at home gives you the benefit of working the amount of hours you demand. You are able to specialize in nutritional supplements to support weight loss or gain, sports nutrition, or as a nutritionist specializing in eating disorders. Whatever you choose, your options are unlimited.

Contingent on what chunk of money you're consenting to invest, and what sort of supplement business opportunity suits you most, you will be competent to decide which selection is the most profitable for you. It is vital to choose the option you are most comfortable with, because it is then more probable that you will succeed and your business will be profitable.

Mens Jewelry in Classic and New

Mens Jewelry in Classic and New Materials by David Done

In recent years, men's jewelry has come into the spotlight. Years ago, Tiger Woods began wearing magnetic bracelets to apparently help his golf game. These bracelets were titanium, steel or sterling silver and were often in the cuff style. Well, I do not know if the bracelet improved his game but it may have helped start the ball rolling on the bracelet jewelry trend. Soon after, more and more professional golfers began to wear these bracelets and soon after that more and more golf enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, these enthusiasts were soon wearing their "golf" bracelets all the time. Perhaps they thought that the more they wore their bracelet, the greater benefit it would have. In hindsight, I wonder if there was something more to the increased popularity of these seemingly functional-only bracelets.

Years later, professional cyclist Lance Armstrong unveiled his now infamous yellow rubber "Live Strong" bracelet and launched his Lance Armstrong Foundation. These little yellow yet powerful bracelets were soon being worn by everybody from celebrities to your next door neighbor â€" men included. Lance's choice of material â€" rubber â€" and color (very gender neutral) were probably key factors to their immediate and widespread popularity. This is, of course, not to mention that the bracelets were for a worthy cause and led by one of America's favored sportsman at the time.

Well, many years have passed since the Tiger Woods magnetic bracelet and the Live Strong bracelet. However, the jewelry designers began to take notice of the bracelet trend and immediately went to work creating men's jewelry, and in some cases entire men's collections. At last year's JCK jewelry trade show in Las Vegas, hundreds of designers showed off their mens jewelry and collections. Several themes emerged from the many designers. Popular materials were sterling silver (think John Hardy Jewelry and David Yurman Jewelry) and leather, platinum and white gold (think the D.Side collection, accented with tiny diamonds, by Damiani), and also rubber (think the Falco for Men collection by Di Modolo). The rubber material may have been inspired from the Live Strong bracelet or from the material now being popular strap choices for mens sport watches. Popular items were bracelets, perhaps thanks to the early pioneers of the men's jewelry trend and pendants on sturdy chains (again think of the D.Side collection by Damiani). While women's jewelry has been the center of attention, men can finally find multiple luxury designers and luxury jewelry intended just for them with the sole purpose of enhancing their style with classy, attractive and not-too-blinged-out jewelry.

Hair Loss

It's true, hair loss happens to women as well as men. This may come as a shock, but hair loss in women is not as rare as you might think. The fact is, women do experience hair loss, but they may not realize it until later in life.

Just like with men, hair loss in women comes on gradually. Unless you are paying attention, you may gaze into the mirror one morning and be shocked that your hair appears to have lost its fullness; there may be thinning spots, which upon close inspection reveal balding areas.

1 Out of Every 3 Women Will Lose Hair

When a woman begins losing her hair, it is usually due to a condition known as androgenetic alopecia. The result of this form of hair loss is a thinning of the hair in the top, and front areas of the head. Androgenetic alopecia is hereditary and can be inherited from either side of the family. It is estimated that about 33% of postmenopausal women experience hair loss that can be contributed to androgenetic alopecia.

Additional causes of hair loss in women include, stress, birth control pills, and hormone imbalance. Though distressing, hair loss due to these causes normally only lasts about a year. After giving birth, a woman may also experience some hair loss, and a number of women are extremely shocked when it occurs, but can take comfort in knowing that it is not usually permanent.

Permanent hair loss can occur if the hair follicle dies, but if the hair follicle is in a dormant state, there is still hope to stop, and possibly even reverse hair loss. Fortunately there is a way to combat hair loss.

Hair loss is a condition that affects many people across the world, young and senior; male and female, regardless of race or health. There are many hair loss myths and false or innacurate information in the world of hair loss, especialy about the causes of and treatment for hair loss. We aim to provide as much positive information, facts and hope for you, the consumer, so that you are well-armed when it is your time to make an informed decision about your condition.

Acid and Alkaline Balance

Excerpts from Dr Hidemitsu Hayashi

Director of Tokyo Water Institute

Water from mountain lakes and streams has long been known to be the healthiest water in the world and unlike distilled water, which is dead, this water can be called "living water."

When an atom or molecule gains or loses an electron, ionization occurs. When water is ionized, the molecule splits into two parts, the hydrogen ion (H+) and the hydroxyl ion (OH-). These ions combine with other solutes in water, often minerals like calcium or potassium, to create an active chemical reaction.

When water carries more hydrogen than hydroxyl ions it is said to be acidic; when hydroxyl ions predominate, then science calls water alkaline. Our blood system is always working to keep itself at that critical pH of 7.4. This process is called homeostasis.

When we drink popular soft drinks like colas, which have an acidic pH of 2.5, the bloodstream does not lower itself to that level. Rather, sugar and other elements of the drink is process by the blood into acid wastes; some are eliminated, and others are stored at various locations in the body.

What is it causes us grow old?

Several theories exist today and they all seem to have one thing in common; they cannot stop, hinder, or slow down the ageing process. They certainly have not produced better health and they have not answered the question of why we age.

Yet there is another theory of ageing and illness that has been around for many decades. A few doctors and nutritionists in the US and Europe, but mainly by doctors and scientists in Japan, Korea, Asia and other Pacific Rim countries voice it. Briefly, this new theory says that that ageing and many diseases result from the accumulation of acid waste products in the body.

Poor diets, either a present one or one in the past, can cause acid wastes to be stored in the body. A meat and potato diet for example, can cause the body to become more acidic.

When acid wastes enter our bloodstream, the blood, in order to maintain that narrow pH range will store them somewhere else. Acid salts stored in the body, over the decades, will overburden the system.

A way has to be found to rid the body of wastes, so that alkalizing the bloodstream can treat adult diseases

Western medicine does not attempt to remove acid wastes from the physiological s ystem; so today's modern medicine is deficient in treating adult diseases.

Even if medicines cure the disease, and the acids are not removed form the body; the treatment's effectiveness will only be temporary.

Bad diets, including meat and potatoes, fried foods, refined bread, soft drink colas and sugars, build up acid salts in the body. Often these deposits, by having to be stored away from the blood flow, can remain in the body for decades.

Stress, both mental and physical, can create acid deposits in the body. Mental stress can make you feel depressed.

While the physiological, scientific connection to stress in the body has not been completely established, there exists a school of thought in psychology, called psychosomatic, which maintains that one's mental state will influence health.

Doctors in Japan, following more than forty years of research and testing, believe that daily drinking of alkaline water can lift depression.

Lets look at some of the healing benefits of drinking ionized alkaline water.

Obesity is a major health problem in America. It arises from the overeating of carbohydrates and fats.

When the metabolic process is not able to burn them away, the blood must place these fatty acids somewhere. It first stores them under the skin, around the waist in men, and around the hips, thighs and breasts in women.
Then it deposits wastes around organs and tissues, which then receive a smaller supply of nutrients and are thereby damaged.

This second stage is more deadly.

An easy gentle way to lose weight is to wash fatty acids out of the body by drinking six to eight glasses of alkaline water a day.

This practice has been employed in Japan for the last thirty years, and doctors there record numerous instances of weight loss.

Dr. Keiichi Morishita in his book, "The Hidden Truth of Cancer", states that if the blood develops a more acidic condition, then these acidic wastes have to be deposited somewhere in the body. If this unhealthy process continues year after year, these areas steadily increase in acidity, and their cells begin to die.

Other cells in the affected area may survive by becoming abnormal; these are called malignant. Malignant cells do not respond to brain commands. They undergo a cellular division that is out of control. This is called cancer.

Modern medicine in America treats these malignant cells as if they were bacteria or viruses. It uses chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to treat cancer.

Yet none of theses treatments will help very much, if after all the acidic environment remains.

Drinking water that has a high alkaline pH, because of its de-acidifying effect, will help in preventing cancer, and in Asia, alkaline water is regularly served to patients.

As the body consumes toxins, the kidneys become over burdened with acid wastes. Nephritis, uremia poisoning, and bladder problems are all acid related conditions, which can be treated by the consumption of alkaline water.

Kidney stones begin as tiny specks and they gradually build into solid stones, composed of phosphates, urates and others. They are another form of acidic salts.

Drinking plenty of alkaline water will prevent kidney stones from forming, and even after their formation, it can dissolve them. Japanese doctors have used alkaline water for years to treat the kidneys.

Alkaline water is produced using electrolysis to electrically split filtered tap water into alkaline and acid water. The machine first developed in Japan in the early 1950's, and approved for use a medical device by the health and rehabilitation ministry in 1966. The ionized minerals in tap water are important. Common alkaline minerals are sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium; the common acid minerals are chlorine, lead, sulphur and phosphorous.

The water ionizer has two chambers, with positive and negative electrodes. When the process is complete, one chamber provides alkaline water with its ionized alkaline minerals. This is what we drink, the water that is so healthy for us.

Alkaline water, having a pH of between 9 and 11, will neutralize harmful stored acid wastes, and if you consume it every day, will gently remove them from your body. Yet, since the water is ionized, it will not leach out valuable minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium or sodium.

A man worried about the effect of the prescription drugs he was taking for overweight began consuming two quarts a day. After six months, he had thrown away his drugs, and had lost over thirty pounds.

Alkaline water experiences; a woman in her forties under high stress was diagnosed with high blood pressure and was told she had abnormally high cholesterol levels. She began consuming one and a half quarts a day of alkaline water. After a few weeks, both her cholesterol and blood pressure were lowered; and as an added benefit, her stomach began to feel much better.

A teenager with severe acne began drinking the water and after three months, the condition was cleared up. He consumed two quarts a day of alkaline water.

In California, a man had been suffering from super acidity for many years, and after eating a meal would unpredictably vomit. He began consuming six glasses of the alkaline water per day. Within a week his acidity ended; he also lost fifteen pounds in three months, and discovered a dramatic rate of increase in his ability to heal small ailments, like cuts and bruises.

A woman had suffered constipation for thirty years, and began drinking the water on a regular basis, and completely rid herself of this condition. She had also lacked an appetite for years, but has now developed a healthy one.

One man, who likes to consume alcohol moderately, noticed when he began consuming the water on a regular basis that he quit suffering hangovers, and the drowsiness he regularly experienced had left him.

A female athlete in her twenties began consuming the water for a stomach condition; she felt an increase in her general energy level, and after a day of strenuous training, found that the alkaline water minimized the aches and pains she had always previously experienced.

For years, a woman had suffered ulcers, and was feeling nauseous from her medication; a regular consumption of the water allowed her to cease her medication and the ulcer to go away.

One could go on and on with these stories, and there are many more, but what we suggest you do is simply try the water yourself.

5 errors to avoid in a financial crisis

But sometimes what you don't do can be just as critical, says Harvard Law School professor Elizabeth Warren, co-author of "All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan."
Here are some of her "don'ts" to keep the situation from getting worse as you right yourself financially:
1. Don't borrow more money. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But in a money crisis, people tend to do the opposite.
"Some people engage in a shell game with themselves," says Warren.
"They pay more down to creditors than they really can afford, leaving themselves with no cash.
" Then they charge current expenses. "They're caught on a treadmill," she says. If you've hit a financial crisis, stop borrowing.
2. Don't cash out your retirement. "There's a reason that money is protected from your creditors," says Warren.
"It's there to protect you when you will not be able to provide for yourself."
No matter what you've signed, you shouldn't feel any obligation to use it for debts.
"When the creditors made their bargains with you, they never expected to be able to reach your retirement," says Warren. "Don't give it up voluntarily."
3. Don't take out a home equity loan or second mortgage. "It is so tempting," she says.
Here's why it's a bad idea: If you're having trouble meeting the bills, unsecured creditors (such as credit card companies) can't take your home.
But if you borrow against it, the new lender can. And if you later decide to file for bankruptcy, the home is usually protected. Unless you've used it as collateral.
4. Don't file for bankruptcy until the crisis is over. "Filing too soon, that is before the crisis is over and the debt hemorrhage has stopped, can leave the person in worse shape," says Warren.
"Because the problem continues, the debts mount up and now bankruptcy is not available."
For instance, if you got into the situation because you lost your job, wait until you are securely in a new job and have some assurances of stability before you file.
If medical bills are the problem, see if you can wait until the crisis is over and you know you won't be adding new bills to the pile. And if it's a divorce, wait until the papers are signed and you have all your legal bills and know more about your new circumstances.
"Bankruptcy shouldn't be based on the debts you've built up," says Warren. "Bankruptcy should be a strategy to emerge. It isn't about dealing with an immediate problem. It's about making a better future."
5. Don't panic. "You have options," says Warren. But it's really difficult to plan when all you can see are the creditors you have and the dollars you don't.
"People feel very alone when something goes wrong, and they often feel they are the only ones facing a financial crisis," she says. "And they aren't.
"If you tried your best and ended up in a hole, then don't beat yourself up," says Warren.
"And don't assume you're the only one who couldn't figure out how to win 100 per cent of the time in the great financial game. This is temporary. You'll come back."

Barack Obama Thanks Stas, a 7-Year-Old Political Blogger

Stanislaw "Stas" Gunkel has his own political blog that caught the attention of President-elect Barack Obama.

Stanislaw “Stas” Gunkel is unlike most 7-year-old's, he likes to spend his time blogging about politics, Barrack Obama, and Sarah Palin on his blog Report from Planet Stas‘. Stas wrote about Barrack Obama on his blog and says that one day he wants to be just like him, Barrack Obama heard about this and sent Stas a thank you letter.

I leave you with three bits of advice that will make your life more fulfilling: Look out for other people, even when it does not directly benefit you; strive to make a difference everywhere you go; and get back up every time you are knocked down."

This news was enough to get the mainstream media all excited and landed him an interview on NBC Chicago

It is possible that Stanislaw could one day become one of our top young bloggers .

Pretty much every SAG nod is mirrored by the corresponding Oscar Nomination. Meaning if you follow the winners and losers tonight, you’re almost guaranteed some sort of pay off. Last year the SAGs were the show with the most celebs due to the writers strike. Hopefully the attendance won’t drop now that that’s over. The SAG awards are playing live right now on TNT and TBS.

Strategy to overcome financial crisis

POLICYMAKERS should include investment, employment and economic security policies in national development strategies to move ahead of the current global financial and economic crisis, said a senior United Nations (UN) official.

Dr K.S. Jomo, who is UN assistant secretary-general for economic development in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, says such a strategy is crucial to ensure delivery of important development targets such as poverty reduction.

He said that while emerging (equities) markets in Asia have plunged by about 50% on average, which has had a negative impact on the average household income and wealth, the financial position of many developing countries is in much better shape than during the previous financial crises in Asia and Latin America.

Dr K.S.Jomo

The stronger financial position is due to strong foreign reserves and better fiscal balances, he said at a public lecture entitled, “The global financial crisis and the economic slowdown: Implications for South-East Asia and the UN Response”, on Thursday night. The event was organised by the UN in Malaysia and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS).

“(The year) 2009 will see a 10% drop in foreign direct investments, and a marked slowdown in export growth, especially in Asia. This in turn will result in a significant slowdown in industrial production.Slower growth will also undermine progress in fighting poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),” he adds.

Jomo, who also sits on the Commission of Experts on International Monetary and Financial System Reform, highlighted several policy priorities for countries in Asia, home to the majority of the world’s poorest.

The priorities include reflating the economy, fiscal and monetary measures to spur domestic demand and limit the spread of the crisis across borders and to the real economy.

“To offset weakening foreign demand and contracted export earnings, public spending targeted at infrastructure, alternative energy, health and education is key to stimulating the domestic economy.

“At the same time, governments should look at investment and technology policies that can help diversify the economy, which is crucial for long-term development,” Jomo says.

He suggests that while the world is bracing for an unavoidable immediate global downturn, decisions made by policymakers at national, regional and international levels today would be decisive in determining the length and severity of the present recession.

“Developing countries must take steps today to ensure prudent financial regulation and capital account management techniques that can stem undesirable and excessive capital inflows and to avoid sudden, disruptive large outflows. Equally important is affordable financing channelled toward productive long-term investments, for example, through development banks,” he says.

He points out that the root causes of the financial crisis are neglected global imbalances, overzealous financial liberalisation and also, the failure of the Bretton Woods institutions and rich countries in providing leadership.

Jomo says there is a need for greater inclusiveness, balance and cooperation in reshaping the international financial architecture.

“While these are difficult times for all, the current crisis provides a window of opportunity to lock in reforms to the international financial system and to invest in strategies for sustainable and equitable growth,” he says.

Barack Obama to be America's first black president

Americans placed their faith in Barack Obama today, turning their backs on a past of slavery and segregation and electing the first African-American to the US presidency.

The significance and scale of his victory was recognised today by the outgoing president and commander in chief, George Bush.

"No matter how they cast their ballots, all Americans can be proud of the history that was made yesterday," he said, adding that Obama's "journey represents a triumph of the American story".

In a brief address, Bush said it would be a "striking" sight when Obama and his family came to the White House, and that he had already invited him to visit.

Bush's words came hours after Obama's election party in Chicago, where there were raucous celebration and tears of joy when the US TV networks declared just after 11pm ET (4am GMT) that the Democratic candidate had been voted America's 44th president.

He was carried to victory by record voter turnout across the country, giving him a wider margin over his opponent, John McCain, than any other president in the past two decades.

At least 134 million Americans participated in the election, according to early estimates, representing more than 60% of eligible voters and shattering the previous record of 122 million.

Obama, accompanied to the podium in his home city of Chicago by his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, alluded to the historic nature of his victory.

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer," he said in his acceptance speech.

"It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America."

The Illinois senator spoke moments after McCain made a gracious concession speech in front of his supporters in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing the election to a close after nearly two tumultuous years.

"We have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken and they have spoken clearly," McCain said.

The defeated Republican said America had come a long way from the racial injustices that were a stain on the country's history, and called for the country to unite behind Obama.

He said he deeply admired and commended Obama for winning an "historic election".

McCain's acclaim was followed by hearty praise from world leaders, reflecting broad support for Obama in most international capitals.

Gordon Brown called the president-elect "a true friend of Britain", declaring that "I know Barack Obama and we share many values". The opposition leader, David Cameron, hailed Obama as "the first of a new generation of leaders".

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, said she looked forward to "closer and more trusting cooperation between the United States and Europe" under Obama - a veiled reference to the frustration George Bush often elicited from overseas allies.

The scale of the victory exceeded Democratic expectations, with Obama projected to win 338 electoral votes to McCain's 129.

Obama's successes in the White House race were matched by Democratic wins in congressional seats. The backlash against Bush provided the Democrats with one of their most satisfying wins of the night, ousting the veteran Republican Elizabeth Dole.

A shock twist was developing in Alaska as the Republican Ted Stevens clung to a narrow lead in his race, despite being convicted on corruption charges last week. If he is declared a winner today, Stevens could face expulsion from Congress.

McCain's hopes began unravelling when networks projected Obama would win Pennsylvania, the state where the Republican planned to make his last stand.

An even bigger setback for McCain followed when networks projected Ohio would go to Obama. The state decided the 2004 race between Bush and John Kerry.

Piling on the humiliation for the Republican, Obama was projected to win Virginia, the first time the state has voted for a Democrat in a presidential race since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

Obama was projected to hold on to all the states the Democrats took in 2004, and win half a dozen or more of the battleground states that had been held by the Republicans.

The Democrat was projected to win New Hampshire, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey. McCain was projected to win Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina.

Fears that many white voters would in the privacy of the polling booth fail to vote for a black candidate appeared to be unfounded.

Americans voted in record numbers throughout the day as they finally got the chance to turn their backs on Bush's disastrous presidency and choose a new leader after America's longest and costliest election campaign.

From the eastern shores of Virginia, across the industrial heartland of Ohio, and on to the Rocky mountain states of Colorado and New Mexico and beyond, poll workers and voters reported long lines and waits of several hours in the most eagerly anticipated US election for half a century.

Turnout was at levels not seen since women were first given the vote in 1920. Election officials predicted turnout would come close to 90% in Virginia and Colorado, and 80% in Ohio and Missouri.

The chance to choose America's first black president drew out more minority voters than in recent elections, turnout experts said. White voters represented 81% of the US electorate eight years ago and 74% this year, according to exit polls.

The odds had been stacked against McCain from the start, linked, as he was, to Bush, with his near-record low popularity ratings, hostility towards the Iraq war and an impending recession. But McCain managed to hold his own until mid-September, when the Wall Street crash saw Obama open up a commanding lead.

Obama will inherit horrendous economic problems that will limit the scope of his ambitions. In his final rallies, Obama was already tempering his early promise of change with warnings about how he would have to curb some of his more ambitious plans, trying to lower expectations that he would be able to move quickly on healthcare and education reform.

Independent election monitors reported sporadic instances of delayed openings of polling stations, broken voting machines, ballot shortages, voter confusion and occasional abuse in a number of battleground states including Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Happy New Year

I am always happy this time of year to hear from my far eastern colleagues about the biggest Chinese festival of the year, the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year. Here is calligraphy on this year's celebration that we received from Joe Ye:

Barbara Han and others provided the following explanation and rough translations:

Left

Field mouse jumps between the branches,
and makes the shadow of the moon wobble.

Right

Spring ...
An ox ploughing the field ...
Nice smell fills the valley.

These poems describes the winter mouse, meaning the last year, and the springtime ox, meaning this year.

Middle

The middle horizontal line says Happy New Year.

The middle character is 'Good luck' and is upside down. There is a meaning to this as well, about the good luck coming to you, and not going after it or holding on:

The middle character means good luck, good fortune, happiness, and so on, and its pronunciation is 'Fu'. Why is this character upside down? That is because the pronunciation of 'upside down' is 'Dao le' in Chinese, which is the same as another character meaning arriving, reaching, so when a guest enters your home and sees the poem, they might say 'oh, Fu Dao le', which sounds like 'good luck reaching your home', which are perfect words for you.

I hope you enjoy and appreciate this as much as I do. Happy New Year, good luck letting go, and good new beginnings every day and every moment!
